College of Nursing Award Recipients
Young Alumna of the Year Award
Dr. Jamie J. Skipper, Nurs '97
Bowie, Md.
As a senior scientist at the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, Jamie brings people together from across the country to develop strategies and solutions to leverage health data to learn how we can optimize our health and health care experiences.
To deliver that optimal care, Jamie is committed to improving the patient experience. The majority of her work focuses on empowering patients to make health treatment decisions as equal partners with their health team by ensuring that they have access to their own health data and easy-to-use health resources enabled by health information technology.Â
Jamie says the skills she learned at Marquette opened her eyes to the many roles nurses play in the health paradigm.
“I was supported in thinking outside of the box and taking an independent study in basic science research,” she says. “This opened the door to me getting a Ph.D. in cardiac physiology and now leading efforts in an area that requires an in-depth focus on the clinical, research and IT worlds.”
In her spare time, Jamie leads medical mission trips to El Salvador, which serve as a continued reminder of how people struggle with basic access to care. Though El Salvador has certain specific difficulties, she sees many similarities with patients in the United States.
“This includes the inability to talk to our health providers remotely and adequately share data to build off the care and heath experiences from our past,” she says. “It’s a tragedy to see patients lose health, healing time, peace of mind and money simply because of lost or inaccessible data on their health history.”
