Biographical Note
Anne-Marie Scheuerman (1927-2010s) of Pittsford, New York, served as an Assistant Professor/ Professor in the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation of Monroe Community College, Rochester, New York, 1962-1994, and as a professor emeritus, she joined the U.S. Peace Corps in 1995 and served for two years teaching English in Moldova (Eastern Europe). Meanwhile, she began to publicize notable Christian religious events and sites through her photography as an extension of her religious commitment and interest and in audio-visual media. In particular, she focused on events pertaining to Native Catholics and Kateri Tekakwitha in response to a religious calling to do so through a chance meeting with a Sr. Catherine Tekakwitha (Cree from Fort Albany, Ontario) during a 1970 summer vacation in Moosenee, Ontario. This religious sister, who taught First Nations children at a local Catholic school, was unaware of her namesake's shrines in New York State, which caused Scheuerman to see the need for more publicity.
With encouragement and support from friends, Scheuerman began her service to Kateri Tekakwitha's cause by creating and presenting a limited edition slide show, which prompted her to begin photographing events events honoring her. For many years, she photographed related annual events at the National Kateri Tekakwitha Shrine, Fonda, New York; the Shrine of Our Lady of the Martyrs, Auriesville, New York; St. Regis Mission, St. Regis (Akwesasne) Indian Reservation/ Reserve, St. Regis, New York/ Québec; and St. Francis-Xavier Church, °²¹³ó²Ô²¹·É²¹°ìé Reserve, °²¹³ó²Ô²¹·É²¹°ìé, Québec. She also photographed several ceremonies unveiling statues in her honor, and from Auriesville in 1974-1975, she borrowed and reformatted to 35 mm. slide format, related glass lantern slide lecture sets compiled and distributed by Rev. John J. Wynne, S.J., 1935, and undated (1920s). Furthermore, from 1989-2012, she served as the official photographer of the Tekakwitha Conference (Great Falls, Montana), and in so doing, she photographed its regional, national, and international meetings and St. Kateri Tekakwitha's beautification and canonization; she created several visual presentations in slide, motion picture, and video formats; and she authored several illustrated articles and pamphlets.
Several groups have honored Scheuerman for her service to Kateri Tekakwitha's cause and legacy. The Kateri Tekakwitha League, Auriesville, presented its Kateri Award in 1974; the Kateri Tekakwitha Committee of St. Lucy's Church, Syracuse, New York, presented a recognition plaque in 1984; the Kateri Centre of °²¹³ó²Ô²¹·É²¹°ìé presented its Kateri Award in 2003; and the National Tekakwitha Conference thanked her for her 40 years of service in 2011 when Herman D. Ray succeeded her as its official photographer.
