History: The See of St. Thomas was erected as the Territorial Prelature of the Virgin Islands, 1960, which encompassed the United States Virgin Islands. It was elevated to a diocese and suffragen of the Archdiocese of Washington (District of Columbia) and renamed the Diocese of St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands, 1977. It is believed that Taino Indians were among the first parishioners of Ss. Peter and Paul as well as other early parishes. The cathedral parish, founded 1773, initially served St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix Islands and all of the former Dutch West Indies.

Holdings of Catholic records about Native Americans: Sacramental records of Ss. Peter and Paul Cathedral and other early parishes with parishioners of Native American ancestry.

Unless noted otherwise, the repository named above holds (or held) the records described and not the ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ Archives. However, Marquette’s holdings, e.g. Bureau of Catholic Indian Missions Records, include related records about these Native and Catholic groups and places.
