History: Established in 1976, the Province of France unified the four preceding French Jesuit provinces: Paris, Lyon, Toulouse, and Champagne. French Jesuits had evangelized in Quebec and Louisiana until 1762 (Jesuits expelled/ suppressed). Quebec included the Great Lakes and Ohio areas (e.g. Iroquois, Dakota, Ojibwa, Ottawa, Wyandot) whereas Louisiana included the lower Mississippi and Gulf coastal areas (e.g. Apalachee, Chitamacha, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Houma, Tunica).
