History: Pope Leo X recognized the Capuchins as a distinct Franciscan branch, 1517, who self-identify with the post-nominal initials, 鈥淥.F.M. Cap.鈥 They evangelized Native Americans in New France (present-day Alabama and Louisiana), 17-18th centuries, and in the United States, they made their first foundation, 1857.
