History: The Diocese of Sonora was erected for Sonora, Alto California, and Baja California from territory in the Diocese of Durango (now Archdiocese of Durango), 1779. Later, the Sonora Diocese was renamed the Diocese of Hermosillo and elevated to the Archdiocese of Hermosillo. Hermosillo and its predecessors administered these Native American missions in present-day Arizona and California:
