History: The Vicariate Apostolate of New Mexico was erected, 1850, from territory in the Diocese of Durango, Mexico, that was annexed by the United States. The Diocese of Santa Fe succeeded the vicariate, 1853; it was expanded to include the territory in the Gadson Purchase, 1859; and it was elevated to an archdiocese, 1875. The following Catholic schools within its territory have served Native Americans in its present-day territory in New Mexico.
