History: The Diocese of Montreal was erected for the upper St. Lawrence River area from territory in the Archdiocese of Quebec, 1836. Montreal and its predecessor administered St. Regis Mission (Mohawk), St. Regis [Akwesasne], St. Regis Reserve/ Reservation, Quebec-New York, 1836-1892 (transferred to Valleyfield Diocese, Quebec).
