History

History

The Diocese of Lead was erected for western South Dakota from territory in the Sioux Falls Diocese, 1902; the Lead Diocese was renamed the Diocese of Rapid City, 1930. Rapid City/ Lead reported 6,000 baptized Native American Catholics, 1902, and 14,800, 1999. Rapid City/ Lead and its predecessor have served the following Native American missions, parishes, and schools in South Dakota:
