History: Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, El Paso, Ysleta del Sur Pueblo, Texas, has been a predominantly Native American (Tiwa [Ysleta] parish in the Diocese of El Paso (Archives: El Paso, Texas).

1680

Piro, Tano, Tiwa, and Jemez Indian refugees fled the Pueblo Revolt in New Mexico, and the missions of San Gregorio de Abó, Nuestra Señora de Purísima Concepción de Quarai, San Buenaventura de las Gran Quivira (near Mountainair), Sevilleta, Alamillo, Senecú del Norte, and Socorro.

Franciscans (later St. Paul Custody, Santa Fe, New Mexico) established and administered Corpus Christi/ San Antonio de la Ysleta Mission (Tiwa), El Paso/ Ysleta, Texas

Isleta Indians from Isleta Pueblo, New Mexico, joined the El Paso are Native settlements, which became known as Ysleta (named after Isleta Pueblo, New Mexico), Socorro (named after Socorro, New Mexico) and San Elizario
