History: Mother Frances Streitel founded the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother (of the Third Order of St. Francis of Assisi) in Italy, 1883-1885. Its sisters have self-identified with the post-nominal initials, 鈥淪.S.M.鈥 and made their first U.S. foundations in Kansas and Wisconsin, 1890.
Sister Margaret Troy, S.S.M., served as director of the Siggenauk Center (Menominee, Ojibwa, Winnebago [Ho Chunk], and others), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, 1980-1988 (closed), and continued her Native American ministry on the Forest County Reservation (Potawatomi), Crandon, Wisconsin, and Congregation of the Great Spirit (e.g. Winnebago [Ho Chunk], Menominee, Ojibwa), Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
