Biographical Note:
Daniel W. Yee was born in China in 1911 and moved to the United States in 1927 to join his father, the pastor of the Chinese Independent Baptist Church in San Francisco. In 1929 his father returned to China and Daniel moved to Milwaukee, where his brother resided. Yee later enrolled at ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ, graduating in 1937 with a degree in Civil Engineering. After graduation he returned to China and worked as a civil engineer in Guangxi Province. He also served as the city deputy in Guilin between 1956-1966 and 1977-1988. Daniel Yee died on March 6, 1990.

Scope and Content: The collection contains 114 letters written by Daniel Yee to former ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ classmate Morris Hootkin, a resident of Milwaukee, in addition to related information about the correspondence. One letter dates from 1939. Yee and Hootkin then lost contact for 40 years, due to the Second World War and the communist revolution. In 1979, assisted by ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ's alumni office, Daniel Yee reestablished contact with Morris Hootkin, following normalization of relations between the governments of the United States and Peoples Republic of China earlier that year. Daniel Yee routinely discussed world events, U.S. presidential politics, the Milwaukee Brewer's professional baseball team, his desire to retire, and events at their alma mater.
Yee was circumspect in describing his views on politics and religion in China, although more candid in writing about world politics. (Letters often arrived at Hootkin's residence having been opened.) The collection also includes newspaper clippings from a Chinese English-language newspaper, retained by archivists because Yee often referred to specific articles within his letters. The collection also includes a recording of a two-part interview that Ms. Barbarba Kaplan conducted with Yee during a March 1980 vacation to China. The collection also contains several photographs of Daniel W. Yee. Paul McInerny of ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ's alumni affairs office also contributed a small amount of correspondence with Yee from this era.
Arrangement: The letters are arranged chronologically.
