Community Engagement Symposium to be held at Marquette, Nov. 12
Nov. 11, 2019
MILWAUKEE — Ӱ is hosting the 2019 Community Engagement Symposium: Deepening Partnerships in Pursuit of Social Justice from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 12, at the Alumni Memorial Union, 1442 W. Wisconsin Ave.
The Community Engagement Symposium is an event offering community organizations, faculty, staff and students the chance to network and engage in dialogue about mutually beneficial, bidirectional research and learning opportunities, as well as the necessary tools and resources to support and strengthen partnerships.
The symposium will focus on the “Six Pathways to Public Engagement,” defined by Stanford University’s Haas Center for Public Service as efforts that contribute to the public good — direct service, policy and government, social entrepreneurship and corporate social responsibility, community engaged learning and research, community organizing and activism, and philanthropy.
The event will feature six keynote speakers: Grady L. Crosby of Johnson Controls Foundation, Annie McGinnity Kubes of the McGinnity Family Foundation, Naya Jones of the Medical College of Wisconsin, Janan Najeeb of the Milwaukee Muslim Women’s Coalition, Shauntay Nelson of All Voting is Local and Tracey Sparrow of Next Door Foundation. Speakers will share how their work and their organizations address social justice in Milwaukee. Each will highlight one of the six pathways to public engagement. More information about the keynote speakers is available online.
“The Community Engagement Symposium is a unique way for students and professionals of all interests, backgrounds and walks to life to share and learn from their experiences,” Dr. Dan Bergen, executive director of community engagement at Marquette, said. “This year’s lineup of keynote speakers represents an impressive diverse cross section of professions, which will undoubtedly leave attendees with a greater understanding of the importance of community engagement in all of its forms, and how continues to evolve.”
The symposium will also include breakout sessions, a curated exhibit of community engaged artwork and a networking reception.
Registration for the event is now closed. Media wishing to attend should contact Shelby Williamson in the Office of Marketing and Communication at shelby.williamson@marquette.edu or (414) 288-6712.
