Marquette Navy ROTC student ranked No. 2 in the nation
February 28, 2019
MILWAUKEE — Midshipman 1st Class Donovan Lyon of Marquette’s Navy ROTC was ranked No. 2 in Order of Merit. He was chosen out of 251 future surface warfare officers from 77 universities for ship selection.
Lyon, a biomedical sciences major, earned his place in the order for his strong academics, physical performance and Naval aptitude over his nearly four years in the Navy ROTC program. He was the second officer candidate or midshipman to make his selection on Feb. 21 and chose as his first duty station the USS Ross, homeported in Rota, Spain.
Marquette has now boasted the No. 2 future officer in the country in back-to-back years: Midshipman 1st Class Brandy Kinnunen earned the distinction in 2018; she also chose the USS Ross.
The Navy ROTC program educates and trains qualified young men and women for service as commissioned officers in the Navy's unrestricted line, the Navy Nurse Corps and the Marine Corps. As the largest single source of Navy and Marine Corps officers, the Navy ROTC Scholarship Program plays an important role in preparing mature young men and women for leadership and management positions in an increasingly technical Navy and Marine Corps.
