President Lovell speaking

MILWAUKEE — President Michael R. Lovell of Ӱ will speak at the Council on Competitiveness Forum today, Wednesday, Dec. 18, at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington, D.C.

President Lovell will share the stage with President Jere Morehead of the University of Georgia in a session called, “Defining the Future of U.S. Higher Education through the Lens of America’s Competitiveness.” The talk is one in a series of TED-style discussions that will explore the future of sustainable production, consumption and work.

President Lovell is a member of the Council on Competitiveness board and co-chairs its University Leadership Forum along with President Morehead. Officially launched on June 18 in Washington, D.C., the Council on Competitiveness University Leadership Forum enables leaders from America’s top academic institutions to join forces with business leaders and national laboratories to understand the changing innovation landscape, impact policymaking related to science and technology, and prepare tomorrow’s workforce.

As part of its initial work plan, the University Leadership Forum is addressing challenges and opportunities in three broad areas:

  • “extreme innovation” to help solve the world’s greatest challenges;
  • partnerships between universities and industry; and
  • the fusion of the humanities and STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) disciplines.

The Council on Competitiveness’ mission is to shape policies and run programs to jump-start productivity and grow America's economy. The council's membership is diverse and nonpartisan, representing the major sectors of the economy – CEOs, university presidents, labor leaders and national lab directors.
