Learn about Islam, and more importantly, about being Muslim in the U.S. at this point in history. Upon return, we hope students will become active agents in engaging Muslims and countering Islamophobia.
This interfaith immersion experience visits Dearborn, Detroit, and Hamtramck, Michigan, places with the largest concentrated Muslim populations in the U.S. The next trip will take place during Marquette's fall break from October 16-20, 2024.
We anticipate departing from campus in the late afternoon/early evening on the 16th depending on participant midterm schedules.
Each iteration of the trip will vary. Activities may include the following:
. Please note, specific activities and meetings may change trip-to-trip.
This trip is open to Marquette undergraduate and graduate students. There may also be limited opportunities for faculty and staff to participate. . Applications are due September 9, 2024. We hope to notify applicants if they have been selected by September 16, 2024.
In addition to completing the online application form, applicants should submit one letter of recommendation from a Marquette faculty or staff member, job supervisor, or a leader from a service trip/volunteer opportunity to Dr. Louise Cainkar (louise.cainkar@marquette.edu) with "Islam Immersion" in the subject line. This letter should address your openness to new ideas and capacity to work well with others.
This trip is highly subsidized for student participants. Students selected to participate in the program are expected to pay a participation fee to help cover costs associated with transportation, lodging, and museum fees. The amount of the student fee for 2024 is $200. If additional financial assistance is necessary, please indicate so in your application.
