Associate Professor

Theology Department (Judaism and Christianity in Antiquity)

Joshua Ezra Burns (Ph.D., Religious Studies, Yale University, 2010; M.S., Higher Education Administration and Policy, Northwestern University, 2018) studies Jewish civilization in classical antiquity and its reception in contemporary historical and theological research. His areas of specialization include Jewish life and thought among the Greeks and Romans, the Hebrew Scriptures, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and early Jewish-Christian relations. Dr. Burns is the author of The Christian Schism in Jewish History and Jewish Memory (Cambridge University Press, 2016) and numerous articles in academic journals, books, and online databases. Though mostly an armchair archaeologist, he has participated in the excavation of ancient sites in Israel and Italy. He is currently working on a study of early Jewish and Christian attitudes toward Sabbath observance.
