Mark O'MearaDR. MARK T. O'MEARA, ARTS '73
West Bend, Wis.

Whether he’s using his skills as an orthopedic surgeon to improve the health and quality of life of his patients, or putting time and effort into countless causes in his community, Mark gives his all.

“To me, success is setting a goal and striving for it as hard as you can,” says Mark, an orthopedic surgeon in West Bend, Wis. “Even if you don't quite accomplish your dream, you can consider yourself successful if you put forth an honest effort.”

This philosophy is something he learned during his time at Marquette, and it has served him well. “It was impressed on me to not relax or hold back as far as academic studies were concerned. I was able to gain admission to medical school only because of that effort,” he says.

It also helps him help his patients live fuller lives. “I enjoy being able to care for orthopedic conditions such as arthritis and fractures because we are able to rapidly correct the problem and allow the patients to resume normal activities,” he says.

Mark also credits Marquette’s mission with helping him give more in other ways. A former chief of staff surgery at St. Joseph’s Hospital in West Bend, Mark has brought his leadership and commitment to service to several organizations over the years. He has been co-chair for the Washington County United Way Campaign, as well as served on the boards for the United Way, the American Cancer Society, St. Joseph's Hospital and the St. Joseph's Hospital Foundation.

Mark and his wife Kris are active in the capital campaign for their daughters' high school, Divine Savior Holy Angels. He’s also committed to his parish, participating in the liturgy, leading a Scout troop and providing rides to Mass for those unable to drive.
