Trio of Faculty Receive Nearly $4 million in NIH Funding 

Hearing_CircleCropDr. Matthew Hearing was recently awarded a highly-prestigious R01 grant worth over $2 million from the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute on Drug Abuse. A  five-year award, the RO1 provides support for the Hearing Lab’s goal of unlocking the neurological basis of opioid addiction.

Blackmore_circlecropEvans_CircleCropAdditionally, Dr. Murray Blackmore and Dr. Jennifer Evans were recently awarded R21 grants totaling $1.6 million from the National Institutes of Health for their research on spinal cord injury and circadian rhythms, respectively. Dr. Blackmore was awarded the grant to explore how disruptions to the supraspinal connectome differentially affect gene expression patterns in neuronal subpopulations while Dr. Evans is investigating the viability of the Syrian hamster as a reliable animal model for studying how circadian rhythm disruptions affect behavior.

Graduate Student Wins NIH F31 Fellowship
elaine_circlecropElaine Grafelman, a fourth-year PhD student in Neuroscience, secured the prestigious F31 fellowship from the National Institutes of Health. The fellowship will help with professional development and outreach as well as Elaine's research on the role of dopamine in mediating aversion-induced changes in drug seeking and negative reinforcement. 

Dr. Khadijah Makky receives Fr. Pedro Arrupe, S.J. Faculty Colleague Award
Makky_circlecropDr. Khadijah (Gigi) Makky, clinical professor of biomedical sciences, was selected by colleagues as a recipient of the Fr. Pedro Arrupe, S.J. Faculty Award. The award is given to faculty whose generosity and compassion stands out among colleagues.

Biomedical Sciences Major Wins AHPRC Student Research Award Joanna Lee was awarded $5,000 to pursue her project with faculty mentor Dr. Christopher Sundberg entitled, "Potential Role of Cellular Senescence on Skeletal Muscle Fiber Type-Specific Atrophy with Aging.” The Marquette Athletic and Human Performance Research Center (AHPRC) Student Research Initiative supports undergraduate research across campus.
