Chair's WelcomeWELCOME!

The faculty and staff of the Department of Social and Cultural Sciences (SOCS) welcome you to our website. Our department is home to four majors/minors (Anthropology, Criminology and Law Studies, Sociology, and Social Welfare and Justice), two interdisciplinary minors (Law & Society and Culture, Health, and Illness), and a graduate program (Master’s degree in Criminal Justice Data Analytics). Our students and faculty also participate in a variety of interdisciplinary programs such as Peace Studies, Gender and Sexualities Studies, and Environmental Studies. Hundreds of students major or minor in one of the social and cultural sciences, making our department one of the largest in the Klingler College of Arts and Sciences.

Marquette SOCS students have a number of opportunities to extend their learning beyond the classroom and be the difference. Students can pursue internships in their field of interest, study abroad, get involved in student clubs, engage in service learning, and conduct research as a part of their coursework.

Marquette’s SOCS department is home to nationally recognized scholars who teach and conduct research in a wide range of areas, including immigration policy, gender, the law, religion, the family, and sexuality. Books by our faculty have been published by top university presses such as Oxford and Columbia Universities, NYU, University of Chicago, and by academic presses including Sage, Russell Sage Foundation Press, and the Taylor and Francis Group. Many of our faculty have been the recipients several prestigious University and College awards including the Lawrence G. Haggerty Faculty Award for Excellence in Research, the Association of ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ Women Faculty Achievement Award, Faculty Award for Teaching Excellence, Way Klingler Young Scholar Award, Way Klingler Fellowship Award, and Excellence in Faculty Advising Award.

We hope you find our website helpful in learning more about us, who we are, and what we do. If you would like further information, please consult our faculty and staff directory. We would be happy to answer any questions you have about studying the social and cultural sciences.
