Department of Intercollegiate Athletics Award Recipients

Distinguished Alumna of the Year Award

MARY BETH H. NIENHAUS, ARTS '65
Appleton, Wis.

Less is more in golf. Tell that to Mary Beth. She was the first female varsity student-athlete in Marquette history. Amateur state golf champion from 1966–69. Wisconsin Female Golfer of the Year in 1969. LPGA Coach of the Year in 1987. And she’s one of only a handful of female members of the Wisconsin Golf Hall of Fame. Fittingly, she was a math major.

Lifetime Achievement Award

DR. MICHAEL P. WOODS, ARTS '74
Oconomowoc, Wis.

For Michael, precision has always been absolutely vital. A skilled anesthesiologist, he’s also a former speed skater — the only Marquette graduate to compete in three Olympics and medal at three World Championships.

Friends of Marquette Athletics Award

STANLEY J. ANDRIE, ENG '56, and
BARBARA GOMBAR ANDRIE, ARTS '56

Sheldon, S.C.

Stan’s athletic scholarship set the stage for a Marquette degree and allowed him to meet his future wife, Barbara. Together, the Andries started an endowed athletic scholarship for men’s basketball and rarely miss a home game, despite living out of state.

M Club Hy Popuch Memorial Service Award

 PAUL R. NOWAKOWSKI, ARTS '87, LAW '90
Mequon, Wis.

How does a name like Nowakowski become synonymous with the letter M? Years of support and time dedicated to the M Club — plus a stint as president and three-time Hall of Fame Committee chair. That’s how.

Young Alumna of the Year Award

DR. KRISTEN L. MASKALA, ARTS '94
Richfield, Wis.

Kristen is a modern-day Marquette legend — her jersey is one of only three retired by women’s basketball. Now, the three-time academic All-American volunteers as the team doctor for Hartford (Wis.) High School and specializes in sports medicine as an orthopedic surgeon.
