New Student Orientation (NSO)

NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION

New Student Orientation (NSO) is a foundational experience for all incoming Midshipmen at ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ's NROTC unit. This rigorous program serves three essential purposes: (1) to efficiently process you into our unit, (2) to provide you with basic military instruction, and (3) to help you smoothly transition into life as a Midshipman within the Company. Over the course of approximately one week, you will engage in a series of challenging and rewarding activities designed to set the stage for your journey in the NROTC program.

The orientation begins with your arrival at the university, known as Admin Day, where you will complete necessary paperwork, receive your uniforms, and meet the staff and fellow Midshipmen. This administrative processing ensures that you are fully prepared to begin your training.

Throughout NSO, you will receive basic military instruction that introduces you to the customs, courtesies, and core values of the United States Navy and Marine Corps. You'll participate in drill exercises, physical training, and uniform inspections, all aimed at instilling discipline, teamwork, and attention to detail. Under the guidance and supervision of the unit staff, Midshipmen in leadership positions will teach you the importance of camaraderie and self-discipline, qualities that are essential for success in the NROTC program and your future military career.

In addition to physical and military training, NSO includes professional training on a wide range of topics such as naval operations, career paths within the Navy and Marine Corps, nutrition, and the rich history of these branches. You'll also receive instruction on service selection, drug and alcohol policies, and equal opportunity/sexual harassment policies. This comprehensive training lays the foundation for your professional development, preparing you for the challenges and opportunities that will shape your four years in the program and beyond.

We encourage you to use the remainder of your summer to prepare yourself mentally and physically for the challenging, yet immensely rewarding, road ahead. Your success in the NROTC program begins with the effort you put forth today, and NSO is the first step in that journey.

FRESHMAN ORIENTATION RACE OF COMPETITIVE EXPLORATION

As part of NSO, you will also participate in the Freshman Orientation Race of Competitive Exploration (FORCE). FORCE is a dynamic and highly competitive event that tests your physical endurance, mental toughness, and teamwork skills. Designed as a race, this event takes you and your fellow Midshipmen through a series of challenging tasks and obstacles, each requiring a combination of strength, strategy, and cooperation.

FORCE is more than just a physical challenge—it's an opportunity to bond with your new teammates and demonstrate your commitment to the NROTC program. You'll navigate through various stations that simulate real-world military scenarios, requiring quick thinking and decisive action. Whether you're carrying a teammate over a difficult obstacle or solving a complex problem under time pressure, FORCE is designed to push you to your limits and beyond.

This event not only builds camaraderie among your peers but also allows you to experience firsthand the importance of working together to overcome adversity. The skills and lessons you learn during FORCE will serve you well throughout your time in the NROTC program and as you prepare for a future in the United States Navy or Marine Corps.

Remember, the effort you put into NSO and FORCE will set the tone for your entire NROTC experience. Embrace the challenge, support your teammates, and push yourself to achieve more than you thought possible.
