Assistant Professor

Exercise Science

Chris earned both a Bachelor and Master of Science degree in Kinesiology from the University of Wyoming. In 2013, he started the pursuit of a Ph.D. in the Clinical and Translational Rehabilitation Health Science program at Marquette with Dr. Sandra Hunter. His dissertation work focused on identifying the mechanisms for the age-related increase in fatigability during dynamic exercise. Immediately following graduation, he began postdoctoral work studying cellular muscle physiology and energetics of aging human skeletal muscle with Dr. Robert Fitts in the Department of Biological Sciences. In 2020, Chris was hired as an Affiliate Faculty through the Athletic and Human Performance Research Center (AHPRC) and is an Assistant Professor of Exercise Science in the Department of Physical Therapy.

Dr. Sundberg’s research focuses on identifying the etiologies of muscle fatigue and the physiological processes that limit human neuromuscular performance in health, aging, and disease. His lab adopts an integrative and translational approach employing multiple cutting-edge techniques to study fatigue and the limits of human performance in the whole limb down to the cellular and molecular levels. He also investigates the adaptive response to exercise training with the goal of developing targeted exercise interventions to improve muscle power output and fatigability in both healthy and clinical populations. Dr. Sundberg’s research has been supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), American Hearth Association (AHA), and the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
