Physical Therapy

Marie Bement received her M.P.T. degree from the University of Iowa in 1997. Following graduation, Dr. Bement worked in an outpatient orthopedic clinic where she was a member of the chronic pain team and was trained as a Fibromyalgia Instructor through the Arthritis Foundation. In 2000, Dr. Bement returned to the University of Iowa to work on a Ph.D. with Kathleen Sluka. While at the University of Iowa, she was an NIH predoctoral fellow and conducted research on the mechanisms of chronic pain. In 2004, Dr. Bement started working at ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ as an Assistant Professor in the Physical Therapy Department.

Dr. Bement’s current research focus is on the mechanisms and management of pain with an emphasis on nonpharmacological management such as exercise-induced analgesia. In addition to her work at ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ, Dr. Bement is the Education Chair and Vice President of the Pain Special Interest Group in the American Physical Therapy Association. Dr. Bement has published a number of research articles and book chapters pertaining to the therapeutic management of pain.
