The master's in clinical mental health counseling program from ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ prepares students to have a successful career as a counselor in a variety of settings, and to enter the job market with a skill set that's in high demand.

Students have the option to stay general, or specialize in addiction, child and adolescent, or clinical rehabilitation counseling. You'll learn to support people in their growth and wellness, as well as address mental health concerns. Additionally, students have the choice of either on campus or .

In addition to rigorous classroom learning, you'll be guided to find a practical clinical placement that is meaningful for you. We challenge students to think critically about the cultural context of their approach, to seek opportunities to serve the underserved, and to do what it takes to be the difference.

Optional specializations with real-world application

Course work focuses on human development, psychopathology, assessment, theories of counseling, consultation, crisis and disaster response, ethical and legal issues, multicultural issues and counseling research, as well as individual, group, family and counseling interventions. Field experiences, small group experiences, and practicum and internships are required and lead to the development of science-practice integration in all of our graduates.

Addiction Counseling

Prepares counselors who can serve clients experiencing difficulties with addictions and co-occurring disorders. 


Child and Adolescent Counseling

Prepares counselors who can provide clinical services to children, adolescents and their families.

Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling

Prepares counselors to understand the medical and psycho-social aspects of disabilities and provide a range of clinical services to individuals with disabilities and their families. Students will meet the eligibility requirements to be a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC).

Learning Outcomes

  • Apply knowledge of bio-psycho-social-cultural foundations of behavior and evidence-based counseling approaches to diverse individuals and groups. 
  • Apply professional, ethical and legal standards in their counseling practices. 
  • Assume advocacy roles for the mental health care of underserved individuals and groups in urban settings.
  • Integrate self-awareness, counseling roles and reflective practices into a professional counseling identity.
  • Provide clinical mental health counseling prevention and treatment services for diverse individuals and groups in community settings.

Career Opportunities

Some of our students often go into careers at community mental health centers, hospitals (e.g., Rogers), DVR and doctoral programs in counseling psychology and counselor education; 91 percent of graduates actively seeking employment obtained positions within 120 days of receiving their degree.

To be eligible for admission to the Graduate School at ÃÛÌÒÓ°Ïñ, applicants must meet the following requirements:

There are no course prerequisite requirements for the clinical mental health counseling program, however, we highly recommend that students obtain experience in a human service setting (e.g., fieldwork, volunteering or employment) to discern if the field is a good fit for their long-term professional goals.

Application Requirements

Read all application instructions prior to beginning an application.

  • Transcripts:
    • Submit copies of all current and previous college/universities except Marquette1
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • A statement of purpose
  • A resume/vita
  • GRE scores are optional
  • For international applicants only: a TOEFL score or other acceptable proof of English proficiency.
  • After all applications are reviewed, the highest ranking applicants will be contacted for an interview with the faculty. This is required for admission. International applicants residing in foreign countries and applicants with extenuating circumstances may conduct their interviews via virtual meeting.

1Upon admission, final official transcripts from all previously attended colleges/universities, with certified English translations if original language is not English, must be submitted to the Graduate School within the first five weeks of the term of admission or a hold preventing registration for future terms will be placed on the student’s record. 

February 1: Priority deadline for admission consideration for the fall term. After the priority deadline, applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis as space permits and may be submitted any time before the following dates:

  • Fall term admissions- August 1 (June 1 for international applicants)

Master's students who are primary and secondary school teachers in southeastern Wisconsin are eligible for two scholarship opportunities: the Milwaukee Area Teachers Scholarship, which provides scholarships for K–12 teachers from the greater Milwaukee area; and the Catholic Schools Scholarship, which covers part of the tuition for students employed by Archdiocese of Milwaukee schools. These scholarships are available only to students enrolled at Marquette.

Private scholarships may be available. U.S. citizens and permanent residents may be eligible to apply for need-based federal aid (loans) to help fund their educational expenses.
