Ignatian Year Meal Pair and Share

  • Lunch option pick-up meal between 11:30 am and 1:00 pm., AMU 449
  • Dinner option pick-up meal between 4:00-5:00 pm., AMU 437

To celebrate the Ignatian Year, Student Affairs is sponsoring a grab-and-go meal pair and share event the week after the gift of time. The premise is simple. Student Affairs and Campus Ministry staff can sign up for the lunch or dinner option. We鈥檒l pair you up randomly with someone else who also signed up. You鈥檒l be notified who your meal buddy is in advance of the event and you'll make plans to meet with that person for the meal somewhere. We'll have boxed meal options for pick-up at a designated location. You can pick up your meal, meet with your buddy, and enjoy each other鈥檚 company while breaking bread together. We鈥檒l provide some reflective conversation questions to get the conversation rolling.

The Spiritual Work of Racial Justice AJCU Reading Group

The intersection of mission and antiracism is an important place for us to continue to develop, reflect, and act鈥攂oth individually and collectively. Current students, faculty, and staff of AJCU institutions are invited to join AJCU partners in reading and discussing The Spiritual Work of Racial Justice: A Month of Meditations with Ignatius of Loyola by Patrick Saint-Jean, S.J.

Through reading this book, participants will explore personal and professional connections to our Jesuit, Catholic mission and racial justice. Participants should be willing to reflect daily and are encouraged to journal as part of this process. We will gather in community to share the fruits of our reflections over four virtual, live sessions. (No prior experience with antiracism work or Ignatian Spirituality is required.)

To join, you must be available for all 4 sessions (listed in Central Time):

  • Tuesday February 8th 7-8 pm
  • Tuesday March 29th 7-8 pm
  • Tuesday April 19 7-8 pm

Book Review:  鈥淓ven though the Exercises occurs in four movements or weeks, they may take longer than a calendar month or year to truly absorb and pray over. The point of the Spiritual Exercises is not to wallow in our own sins or focus on the ways we have failed Jesus. The point is to encounter Jesus, grow closer to Jesus, and follow Jesus. So when we sit at the feet of our crucified Jesus, and follow Jesus. So when we sit at the feet of our crucified Jesus we ask 鈥淲hat have I done for Christ? What am I doing for Christ? What will I do for Christ: If Christ鈥檚 face is that of someone who is experiencing the pain of racism, will it change us? Saint-Jean offers a voice that is often missing. He invites us to be companion on the spiritual journey of reconciliation that racial justice requires.  In this book, the reader will use the Spiritual Exercises as the framework for exploring the ways Christ calls us to the work of anti-racism. This book鈥檚 premise is that antiracism is not an optional aspect of the spiritual life, but rather that it is essential to becoming all that God calls us to be. The goal, however, is not that we will reach a state of antiracist perfection, for this is an ongoing process for our entire life. Engaging in antiracist work is not about perfection but rather a constant quest for grace to see each other as Christ sees us. It asks that we hold antiracism as an intentional aspiration each and every day.鈥

More about the author, Patrick Saint-Jean, SJ, PsyD: Dr. Saint-Jean is a Jesuit Regent. He graduated from undergraduate education at the Universite Victor Segalen de Bordeaux in France and received his graduate degree in Psychoanalysis from the Parisian Ecole Lacanienne de Psychanalyse in Paris and his PsyD from the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico. Dr. Saint-Jean has studied, conducted research and worked in various countries. He completed his theological studies at Catholic Theological union in Chicago in 2019. In his free time, Dr. Saint-Jean enjoys talking with friends an family, writing on social justice issues and watching sports among many other things.

Our Impact on Leadership Development: Unpacking the Multi-Institutional Student of Leadership Results
presented by Dr. Ben Correia-Harker, Co-Principal Investigator

The Multi鈥揑nstitutional Study of Leadership (MSL) can help us think through many questions we ponder in student affairs work, such as how we can employ high impact practices for leadership development across a range of functional areas, how we can help our students bolster their leadership capacity and efficacy, how we can assist students in being more resilient, and how we can cultivate hope.

Marquette participated in the MSL in both 2018 and 2021 (as well as in previous years). This session will engage participants in unpacking the most recent MSL data with a focus on high impact practices for leadership development, leadership efficacy, resiliency and hope. We鈥檒l spend intentional time discussing implications of the data for our work at Marquette with an eye toward planning in our own functional areas.  Maybe you鈥檒l even find ways to collaborate! 

This session is open to anyone but will be of particular interest to those who work with students in leadership development, spirituality and search for meaning, intercultural engagement, and student engagement writ large. Graduate students may also see this as an opportunity to explore how data informs different areas of Student Affairs work. Snacks and beverages will be provided. 

About the MSL

The MSL is the largest college student leadership study available and was created to enhance institutional practice by better aligning the theory鈥搑esearch鈥損ractice cycle. The study emerged as a means to specifically address questions regarding students鈥 educational needs and to identify elements of the higher education environment that contributed most significantly to leadership outcomes. The impact of MSL extends beyond the arena of leadership education.

About the Presenter

Ben (he/him) is an Associate Director of Engineering and Innovation Leadership Development at 蜜桃影像 where he provides curricular and co-curricular leadership development experiences in collaboration with the Excellence in Leadership (E-Lead) team.  In this capacity, he facilitates a number of courses across the E-Lead curriculum, mentors undergraduates, and assesses the impact of the program.  Additionally, he is an adjunct faculty member for the College of Education and teaches graduate courses on leadership, quantitative research methods, and assessment.  His research interests include exploring leadership development mindsets and the ways that contexts and social identities influence the development of those mindests. Prior to his current role, Ben worked in various higher education functional areas including residence life, student activities, student union management, and academic advising as well as in a non-profit where he focused on research and assessment.  He received a B.A. in religious studies from the College of Idaho, an M.S.Ed. in student affairs administration from Indiana University, and a Ph.D. in higher education from Loyola University Chicago.

Emerging HSI Day of Dialogue

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Marquette

Learn more about Marquette鈥檚 efforts to foster diversity, equity and inclusion. This program will provide a closer look at Brave and Bold Dialogues, the online educational tool first year students were required to take prior to Orientation. Rasheed Ali Cromwell, president of the Harbor Institute will join us to unpack some of the data Brave and Bold has provided us with and lead us in discussion about how to build on the foundation of Brave and Bold Dialogues.

Marquette University Graduating Senior Survey

As we look to shape, improve and co-create the Marquette experience with students, it's imperative to understand what student experiences are from multiple sources. The Graduating Senior Survey survey is administered annually and investigates graduating seniors' satisfaction with their academic experience and education, engagement in co-curricular learning experiences, perceived impact of their education, experiences with key mission and identity objectives and plans for the immediate future. High-level take-awys from the 2021 survey will be shared by the Office of Institutional Research and Analysis with an opportunity to asks questions about the results and discuss how they inform our work with students.
